Usagi is the Japanese word for “rabbit", but in the Japanese folklore, it designates a mythical creature, the messenger of kami (gods) in the Shinto religion.

In Japan, the rabbit has been favored in many forms of art: drawings, paintings, ceramics and textile. It was chosen as a motif in all manner of crafts and confections since early times.
